How to Prevent People from Opting Out of Your SMS Text List
Keeping your SMS text list subscribers interested can be difficult. You want to advertise enough to make sure you get the brand recognition you are vying for, but not so much that it annoys your subscribers. Here are some easy ways to prevent people from opting out of your text message marketing subscriber list.
Be courteous
No one wants to be woken up or disrupted early in the morning or late at night. If you are a local company, it’s easy to time out your texts to avoid disturbing anyone, but if you are a national brand, it may be a little more difficult. You can segment your text list by area code, or time your campaign so that it works for all time zones. California and New York have a 3 hour time difference, so if you aren’t segmenting a national campaign, texting between noon and 6PM EST (9AM to 3PM PST) is usually a safe bet to make sure that you don’t disturb anyone.
Make the information applicable
Make sure that your marketing campaign is relevant to the people you are texting by segmenting your SMS text list. For example, if you want to send out a coupon for hearing aids, you may want to only include people over a certain age. If you send out information, advertisements or discounts that aren’t applicable to the receiver, they will be quick to unsubscribe.
Offer something of high value
If all you use SMS messaging for is to repetitively update your hours, people will be unenthused about your texts. Keep them interested by offering coupons, discounts, and freebies.
Don’t overdo it
Some people will even block their friends if they text every day. Don’t be obnoxious by over-advertising; it is a surefire way to lose subscribers, and quickly. Make sure that every text you send has a purpose, and is relevant to each subscriber you send it to.
Make it exclusive
Let your subscribers know that the offers, coupons, and discounts they receive are only available to them through your SMS campaigns. If your customers can find the same discounts on other platforms, there’s no point in providing their personal information to get it.
Be compliant with laws
The last thing you want to do when using SMS marketing is to break the law. Make sure that customers opt in to receive messages, are able to opt out, and that all messages are appropriate and not offensive. If you are marketing to children, or if you are a medical practice, there are more specific laws that you should research to make sure you comply both nationally and locally.
Maintaining your text message marketing list is just as important as growing it. As with any marketing plan, being strategic with your text message marketing makes it just that much more powerful.
